In my previous post last August 2, I mentioned that one highlight for this year’s U. S Open is the anticipated comeback of Kim Clijsters in the women’s singles. Well, Kim didn’t just comeback to play the tournament, she came back to win the prestigious title.

For many, it may sound ordinary winning the U. S. Open. Ordinary may it seem until you discover more of Kim Clijsters.

Clijsters announced her retirement in May 2007 citing various injuries and her plan to start a family.  On July 13, 2007, Kim and Brian Lynch got married in Clijsters hometown of Bree, Belgium.  She eventually gave birth to her daughter Jada Ellie on February 27, 2008.  After two years of lay off, Kim announced that she was willing to come out of retirement.  She eventually played two tournaments prior to the U.S. Open with the purpose of warming up for the grand slam event.

Clijsters fought through tough matches all tournament long from Viktoriya Kutuzova in the first round to Caroline Wozniacki in the Finals. At the end of the day, Kim became the first unseeded player and wildcard to win the U.S. Open title. Besides, she was the only one to have beaten both the Williams sisters in the same tournament. And that’s after a two year retirement and giving birth just a year ago. It was indeed a grand comeback for the grand slam title for Kim Clijsters.
