It has been more than a month since I did my last post and I have missed quite a number of developments in the Asian cage scene. On the local front in particular, the PBA Board of Governors’ approval last month for the inclusion of three PBA players donning national colors for the Guangzhou Asiad [...]

Among other things to be discussed is the Samahang Basketbol ng Pilipinas’ (SBP) request for the inclusion of the three PBA players in the national pool. Smart Gilas took a galant stand last Sunday to claim the championship over the World Championship-bound Jordan national team, 91-80 in the Manila friendly tournament officially known as the 2010 Smart Philippine Invitational Challenge. The four-day competition was part of the build-up of the Philippine national basketball team that will see action in this November’s [...]

China made a bold move to bolster its national team by letting go of Guo Shiqiang as head coach. Guo, a former national player, was China’s chief tactician in last year’s FIBA-Asia Championship where the Chinese was upset by defending champion Iran. He has been relegated as an assistant starting April 30, 2010.

The dismal showing of the RP-Smart Gilas in the recent FIBA-Asia Champions Cup causes alarm among diehard Filipino basketball fans including me. I’m a bit worried especially that the Asian Games in Guangzhou, China is just six months away. Assessing the team’s performances in the competitions it joined since its inception, it seems that the [...]

One of the most underrated players in the Smart Gilas roster is Jason Ballesteros. I call him a little big man because he is undersized for his position on the court. He either plays the 4 or the 5 position. Given his height at 6-foot-7, he’s short to play in the team’s frontline. [...]

This year could be a great one for the Far Eastern University’s John Aldrech Ramos. For one, Aldrech is the only remaining contender for the Most Valuable Player award in last year’s UAAP season. Gone are Rabeh Al-Hussaini of Ateneo and last year’s winner Dylan Ababou of the UST. With both of them [...]
