Smart Gilas ruled Manila invitationals

Smart Gilas took a galant stand last Sunday to claim the championship over the World Championship-bound Jordan national team, 91-80 in the Manila friendly tournament officially known as the 2010 Smart Philippine Invitational Challenge. The four-day competition was part of the build-up of the Philippine national basketball team that will see action in this November’s [...]

On letting go of Guo

China made a bold move to bolster its national team by letting go of Guo Shiqiang as head coach. Guo, a former national player, was China’s chief tactician in last year’s FIBA-Asia Championship where the Chinese was upset by defending champion Iran. He has been relegated as an assistant starting April 30, 2010.

Why not …..

The dismal showing of the RP-Smart Gilas in the recent FIBA-Asia Champions Cup causes alarm among diehard Filipino basketball fans including me. I’m a bit worried especially that the Asian Games in Guangzhou, China is just six months away. Assessing the team’s performances in the competitions it joined since its inception, it seems that the [...]

Chinese ‘skyscrapers’ Part I

There are already a number of Chinese basketball players that invaded the elite professional ranks in other countries or have made name for themselves internationally. So far, among the Chinese who made it to the NBA, only Sun Yue is listed below seven feet. From Wang Zhizhi to Bateer Menk, Yao Ming and Yi Jianlian, [...]

We’re approaching the end of May and by this time almost all of the professional basketball leagues across Asia are done with their campaigns. All eyes are on the formation and training of the respective national teams. As the competitions get tougher, some countries have already begun to overhaul their programs starting with [...]

Jason Ballesteros: The bull-strong ‘little’ big man

One of the most underrated players in the Smart Gilas roster is Jason Ballesteros. I call him a little big man because he is undersized for his position on the court. He either plays the 4 or the 5 position. Given his height at 6-foot-7, he’s short to play in the team’s frontline. [...]

Powershift?

It can be said that only basketball at the Asian Games and FIBA-Asia Championship are considered the major basketball tournaments in Asia. The latter being the continental qualifier for the Olympics and the World Championship. Some competitions like the FIBA-Asia Champions Cup, William Jones Cup, FIBA-Asia Stankovic Cup and Dubai International Basketball Tournament [...]

Wilkens – Yoo tandem out to rebuild South Korea’s basketball

Two people each with winning tradition have combined forces to help rebuild the weakening South Korea’s basketball in the asian arena. Early this month, Lenny Wilkens, former US NBA Coach and 1996 USA Olympic Basketball Team head coach was reported to have agreed to help South Korea’s basketball. Later this month, reigning Korean Basketball League [...]

Aldrech Ramos: Reaching for greater heights

This year could be a great one for the Far Eastern University’s John Aldrech Ramos. For one, Aldrech is the only remaining contender for the Most Valuable Player award in last year’s UAAP season. Gone are Rabeh Al-Hussaini of Ateneo and last year’s winner Dylan Ababou of the UST. With both of them [...]

Star Snippets: Yao Ming, JC Intal, Shin Yong-rok …..

China’s basketball superstar Yao Ming has hinted that he won’t play for the FIBA-World Championship in Turkey this year. The 7-foot-6 Center who also plays for the Houston Rockets in the NBA said that he can not play competitive basketball until July, the time when the teams are on their crucial preparations. 2010 FIBA-Worlds will [...]
