Boxer Z Gorres of the Philippines is now out of the Intensive Care Unit (ICU) and has been transferred to the recovery room of a hospital in Las Vegas, Nevada. He was in a medically induced coma for three days while the doctors removed a blood clot in his brain. Gorres has been hospitalized since November 13 aftre his bout with Luis Melendez of Colombia after the former collapsed moments after he was declared the winner.

Julio Cesar Chavez, Jr. of Mexico was tested positive for a banned substance in his fight against Troy Rowland last November 14. The substance diuretic Furosemide is among the list of banned products of the World Anti Doping Agency under the heading ‘Diuretics and Other Masking Agents’. Chavez Jr., 23, has until December 21 to respond to the Nevada State Athletic Commission otherwise the government agency upholds the findings and suspends him for 9 months and fines $100,000.

National football team coach Takeshi Okada of Japan remains optimistic about his team’s chances of reaching the semi-finals of the 2010 FIFA World Cup. The 53-year old coach, who will be on his second successive World Cup appearance, insisted that they are not bracketed in a group where they have no chance of winning. Japan starts their campaign on June 14 against Cameroon.

Thailand’s football stars Kiatprawut Saiwaew and Teerasil Danda will be back in its line-up this week after the two have recovered from their minor injuries they sustained in the ongoing SEA games in Laos. Saiwaew suffered a pulled ligament while Danda sustained a minor foot injury in their game against Vietnam. Football has been played ahead of other events in the SEA games which will formally open on December 8 and the games start the day after.
