San Antonio Spurs off to a slow start
I have been a diehard San Antonio Spurs’ fan dating back to David Robinson’s era in the ‘90s. And over the years San Antonio have been a constant playoff and championship contender. It’s a bit disappointing to see the team struggling at the start of the season. As of the moment, the Spurs are sporting a 9-8 win loss record to start the season.
Looking at its roster, you notice that there’s no seven footer. One could easily say that the team lack ceiling. Besides, there’s no legitimate inside threat other than Tim Duncan. Looking at its frontline, we have Matt Bonner, Marcus Haislip, Ian Mahinmi, Antonio McDyess, Tim Duncan, Theo Ratliff and rookie DeJuan Blair. Theo Ratliff used to be a defensive monster but his legs are not fresh as it used to. Same as Antonio McDyess who is just around 6’9 and plays the center spot. Besides, DeJuan Blair and Matt Bonner are not big enough to bang bodies of legitimate centers like Greg Oden, Dwight Howard, Shaquille O’Neal and Andrew Bynum.
Furthermore, I think that the players are past their prime. Again, looking at its roster, there are at least five of them who are 30 years old and above. To make it worst, three of them are key players. Duncan is 33, Ginobili is 32 and Antonio McDyess is 35. The older the players, the more they are prone to injuries.
I hope that the Spurs will make some changes in its roster as the season progresses especially on its frontline. One or two young big men who play the middle may be the answer to its early struggle.
